John received a Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California in September, 2001. The M.S. in TCM is a four-year degree (when attending full-time) comprised of 233.5 credits for a total of no less than 3,087 program hours. In addition to requisite didactic courses, ACTCM requires clinical coursework in traditional Chinese medicine with an emphasis on clinical training. Approximately one-third of the Master's degree is devoted to clinical training. Upon successful completion of the M.S. in TCM, all graduates are required to pass the California State Acupuncture Board Certification Exams.

When you see the "L.Ac." after a practitioner's name, it means they are licensed by the State of California to practice Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and herbalism) in California. If you're unsure of a practitioner's licensure status, you can check online
here. In order to maintain licensure, acupuncturists practicing in California must also fulfill requirements for Continuing Education, completing a total of 55 units biannually.

These combined educational and ongoing licensure requirements mean that acupuncturists working in California are among the most highly qualified in the country.
