Injection Therapies

needle, injection and vials

Therapeutic injections are quite often used as an alternative to invasive surgery and have been used for a multitude of painful conditions. They can serve a twofold purpose; to help in diagnosing the painful condition and to help alleviate the pain.

The procedures involved in Injection Therapy are based on the assertion that there is either a mechanical, chemical, or autoimmune response in the painful or affected area that leads to an inflammatory process.

Dr. Dave first determines what part of the body is responsible for causing the pain. This body part that is the source of the pain is often referred to as the pain generator. Injections that are used for diagnosis by the doctor will help to determine this pain generator usually by a process of elimination. It should be understood that there may be more than one part that is responsible for generating the pain. In other words, there may be several pain generators.

The process of finding this pain generator begins with a physical examination and a careful review of the patient’s history. This sometimes leads to what is called a “differential diagnosis.” A differential diagnosis is a list of each and every possibility that the physician can recognize that conforms to the findings from the patient’s history and physical examination. Once the differential diagnosis list has been completed, the goal is then for the physician to determine which item on the list is the actual cause of the painful symptoms. If uncertain, it may be necessary to obtain X-rays, an MRI scan, or CT scan.

Injection therapies are intended to treat the problem at the source of the pain. Therapeutic injections are meant to be used only when Dr. Dave already has a very good idea of the area or structure that is generating the pain. Once that area has been determined, the therapeutic injections can be expected to reduce, or even eliminate the painful symptoms for a good period of time. Although they rarely eliminate pain permanently, in many cases therapeutic injections may last for weeks and sometimes for months. Conditions like back pain, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, knee pain, trigger finger may be greatly helped with Injection Therapy.

A variety of medicines are used in Injection Therapy: Corticosteroids are the most potent anti-inflammatory medicines available, but they are not the only ones at our disposal. Natural and other pharmacological agents may also be used. Most therapeutic injection procedures require that the physician apply the medicine as close as physically possible to the source of the inflammation. This will permit the most effective and efficient relief to the area of concern, helping the patient to be alleviated from their painful symptoms.

At Oasis Integrative Medicine, Dr. Dave uses an array of unique natural and pharmaceutical injections:

  • Trigger Point Injections are used for chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions. Dr. Dave uses a “cocktail” that offers far greater results then traditional trigger point injection.

  • Prolotherapy Injections are used to strengthen tendon and ligaments that have been injured and no longer have the strength and integrity to properly function without pain.

  • Tendon and Ligament Injections are used for the relief of pain and inflammation.

  • Joint Injections are used for patients with osteoarthritic joints.

  • Neural Therapy Injections are used for chronic tight, fibrotic and painful scars.

  • Botanical medical solutions such as traumeel may be used in injections.
